Scratchfilm abstract animation

2 pm – 2:30 pm
Welcome and introduction to scratchfilm abstract animation

We’ll begin the workshop with a screening of short animations to inspire the session! The animations shown will provide a context and show the visual possibilities of abstraction through scratchfilm. We’ll introduce a range of materials, tools and techniques. All materials and tools are provided at the workshop. Nibbles and lunch are included.

2:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Creating your scratchfilm

You’ll be able to explore different techniques to make a scratchfilm: scratching, drawing, painting, collaging or stamping onto 35mm film material such as white leader, black leader, transparent film and found footage placed over an LED lightbox. You’ll be able to choose from permanent markers, fineliner pens, ink pads for stamping, paint, brushes and scratching tools. In this half-day workshop, you’ll be guided to create abstract images in imaginative ways in your own style and bring them to animated life.

4:30 pm – 5pm
Viewing your scratchfilm abstract animation

During the workshop, the scratchfilms will be digitised so that we can view everyone's work in animated motion. At the end of the afternoon we will view all the scratchfilms edited together with a music soundtrack and projected as a high-quality video.

It's a wrap! Subsequently you'll be able to download the video of the collective scratchfilm and share it online or on social media.
