Scratchfilm animation

10 am - 10:30 am
Welcome to Scratchfilm Animation

Welcome and we’ll begin the workshop with a screening of short animations to inspire the day! The animations shown will provide a context and show the visual possibilities of scratchfilm.

Morning tea and nibbles.

10:30 am - 11 am
Introduction to scratchfilm materials, tools and techniques

A short demo will introduce the materials, tools and techniques: you'll be using 35mm film such as white leader, black leader, transparent film and found footage placed over an LED lightbox for working on the film. We'll use a range of materials such as permanent markers, fineliner pens, ink pads for stamping, paint, as well as brushes and scratching tools. All materials and tools are provided at the workshop.

11 am - 1 pm
Creating your scratchfilm animation

You’ll be able to explore different techniques to make your scratchfilm: scratching, drawing, painting, collaging or stamping onto 35mm film material. You'll be guided to animate simple drawings as well as stylised or abstract images in imaginative ways in your own style. The scratchfilms will be digitised so that we can view everyone's work in animated motion as you are creating it.

1 pm - 2pm
Lunch break

Lunch is included in the workshop.

2 pm - 3:30 pm
Creating your scratchfilm animation

You'll be able create as many scratchfilm sequences as you would like and bring your drawing, scratching, painting, stamping and collage to life. During the session the film sequences will be edited together digitally with a music soundtrack and result in a collective video by all participants.

3:30 pm - 4 pm
Viewing your scratchfilm animation

At the end of the day we will view all the scratchfilm animations created by you, projected as a high-quality video.

It's a wrap! Subsequently you'll be able to download the digital video of the scratchfilm and share it online or on social media.
